Among hundreds of ways of making a scrapbook album beautiful, embossed foil creates a unique and elegant look by highlighting on photographs and letters. Embossed foil also gives the scrapbook an antique look which makes the scrapbook layout special.

When it comes to foil, there are many kinds of foil available; from kitchen foil to special embossed foil in many colors. When choosing a type of foil, you need to understand what you need out of experiment.

If you want a metallic, antique look, then you can go ahead with the natural aluminum color of foil. For some scrapbooks, the natural foil color may not be suitable. In this case, you will need to go forward with a color which matches the theme of the scrapbook album. The foil is usually available in supermarkets or local craft stores and they are relatively expensive. So, if you buy foil for the scrapbook, make sure you make use of it carefully.

How to Emboss an Image with Foil

Let’s look at the procedure for creating an embossment using foil. In this scrapbooking tutorial, we will emboss an image and will need the following items.

  1. Foil for embossing (selected based on your requirement)
  2. Tissues
  3. Embossing tool
  4. Paint and paint brush

When choosing paint, make sure you choose something that can be used on the foil surface.

First select a large, clear image to stamp and place it on top of a timber stamping block. Now take a strip of embossing foil and stamp the image onto it. Then take the stamp off and let the ink dry off for some time - 15 minutes will be fine.

Once the ink is half dry, you can position the embossing foil on top of a rubber like surface. A large book or an old mouse pad can be used for this purpose. Then start going over the lines of the image using the embossing tool. This needs to be done carefully as your scrapbook album may look untidy if the image lines are not embossed properly. Use a light pressure when embossing as too much pressure may break the foil.

Once the depth and the look of the embossing are satisfactory for you, take the paint you choose and put it on the embossed image. Please remember to use the minimum amount of paint required for the embossing as too much paint will not give you the antique look that you are looking for. Now spread the paint all over the foil using the paint brush and make sure that you do not put much pressure on the foil because it may spoil the embossment.

Leave the foil ink to dry for 10 -15 minutes and then wipe off the excess paint carefully using the tissues. The main objective of this step is to leave out the paint inside the embossing lines made by the embossing tool. So do not wipe the ink in those areas harder. Now you are left with an image on embossed foil with paint in the deeper areas of the embossed image.

You can now stick the embossed foil on to your scrapbook album. It is a superb way to grab attention of those who will go through your scrapbook album. I’m pretty sure your friends and family will be taken aback by its elegance and will adore it!
